When Will Student Lives Matter? FUTMINNA Students Deserve Safety Before Tragedy

Universities are meant to be places where students pursue knowledge, build their future, and live without fear. Unfortunately, for many students of the Federal University of Technology, Minna (FUTMINNA), this expectation has been replaced by anxiety and insecurity.

Recent reports of attacks and thefts allegedly carried out by bandits around student residential areas have once again exposed the growing security challenges facing students. According to students, valuable belongings were stolen, leaving many traumatized and questioning whether their safety truly matters.

On Wednesday, 30 June 2026, students reportedly organized a peaceful protest to demand urgent action. Their message was simple: enough is enough.

One question continues to echo throughout the university community: Why does it seem that full security deployment only happens after something terrible has already occurred?

Students observed the sudden presence of heavily armed security personnel, including the police and military, following the protest and reported incidents. While this response was welcome, it also raised an important concern. If these security resources can be mobilized after an attack or public demonstration, why can't they be deployed proactively to prevent such incidents from happening in the first place?

Security should never be reactive. It should be preventive.

The responsibility of protecting students does not rest on security agencies alone. Both government authorities and university management have a duty of care toward every student. Providing education also means providing a safe environment where students can focus on learning rather than constantly worrying about becoming victims of crime.

Students are not asking for luxury. They are asking for the fundamental right to safety.

The courage shown by FUTMINNA students in standing together demonstrates that young people are willing to speak up when their wellbeing is neglected. Their voices should not be dismissed or ignored. Peaceful protest is a legitimate way to demand accountability and meaningful action.

As the protesting students declared:

«"We stood our ground because we are the future. We are students; we are not animals. Do the right thing."»

Those words should resonate beyond the university gates. Every Nigerian student deserves to study in an environment free from fear, intimidation, and insecurity.

This is a call to the Federal Government, the Niger State Government, the university management, and security agencies: let student safety become a priority before—not after—another crisis.

The future of Nigeria is sitting in our lecture halls today. Protecting students is not an option; it is a responsibility.
